A great AFTER shot is the icing on the low-carb cake for a great Atkins success story! Feast your eyes on gorgeous Zoanne. Before linking up with the Atkins Nutritional Approach, she was almost 6 stone heavier.
Our 5’5" featured dieter now tips the scales at just 8st 11lbs. Looking at her stunning photos, it’s hard to believe Zoanne, 40, once weighed more than 14st. Although the obvious signs of her overweight are gone, the memories remain.
And that's a good thing because Zoanne knows what she must do to prevent history from repeating itself!
As far back as high school, Zoanne suffered weight woes. However, the real anguish started when she got married and had two children. No matter what she tried, she couldn’t work off the weight. From low-fat diets to Weight Watchers, Zoanne was diligent in her determination.
Time after time she would shed her extra baggage... only to gain it back. By August of 1999, Zoanne was an uncomfortable 14st 9lbs. But then her 78-year-old aunt let her in on a little secret about a big nutritional approach. She sent Zoanne a copy of Dr Robert Atkins’ groundbreaking book.
Zoanne, a registered nurse, liked the science behind the Atkins Nutritional Approach. Having tried just about everything else, she figured "what the heck" and went to work.
"The night I got the book I ran up the stairs after one of my kids and I couldn’t breathe when I got to the top of the steps," Zoanne tells us. "I couldn’t live like that anymore... I didn’t want to.”
"I woke up the next morning and never looked back. I read the book the middle week of August. By December 31, 1999, we had a big party. I had lost 50 pounds by then."
The weight loss was fast and steady for the full-time mum. By May 2000, Zoanne had whittled away a fantastic 5st 12lbs. It took her just 10 months to lose the weight that had plagued her for so many years. The best part: she has maintained that extraordinary loss and that's a feat she never in a million years imagined she could accomplish.
It helped that she followed the Atkins approach to the letter. That meant totally transforming her eating habits. She willingly gave up the biscuits and ice cream she had loved so much.
Like many Atkins fans before her, Zoanne discovered foods rich in white sugar and white flour led to weight issues. Once she started low-carb living, Zoanne she didn’t long for the sweet treats that had frequently doomed other diets.
"Now that I look back on it, I understand that what I was eating never really filled me up," she says. "I couldn’t wait to eat again. The protein is what helps stimulate me. The first thing I eat in the morning is some strawberries and cottage cheese, something that holds me over in the morning so I can get going for the day."
Zoanne had never been a big meat or eggs eater. She also didn’t like fish. But that didn’t stop her from following the Atkins approach. She feasts on lots of chicken and turkey. She uses egg whites for omelettes. The determined dieter says she simply figured out what foods worked best for her and that’s what she eats.
Fresh fruits and veggies make up a big part of her diet. Strawberries and blueberries are a couple of her favourites. She occasionally enjoys a peach or half a banana. She dresses up her salads with chicken, turkey, fruits and other low-carb foods. The diversity stops her getting bored.
One thing Zoanne is strict about is staying away from canned fruits and starchy vegetables. She sticks to fresh versions only.
"I had never eaten that way before," she tells us. "I learned all through my life that the worst way to eat was bacon, sausage and hamburgers. I was taught they were the last thing you should be eating to lose weight. But eating those foods worked for me!"
After a couple of months on the Atkins programme, she began walking on a regular basis. In the beginning, she would go about a quarter of a mile. By May 2000, she was walking a mile and a half to two miles three times a week. At one point, she even began jogging. Yes, the same woman who could barely make it up the stairs was now running... for enjoyment!
Exercise has become an outlet for Zoanne. It’s one of the top priorities on her daily "to do" list. She recently joined a gym where she lifts weights. Zoanne says exercise speeded up her weight loss efforts. Over the last three years, her weight has only varied by a pound or two.
"I’m really proud of myself for keeping the weight off," Zoanne says. "It’s a daily thing. It’s not that I wake up and stress about what to eat to keep the weight off. I’m aware of what I eat plus I feel good. I don’t want to eat a bunch of junk that’s not going to make me feel good.
"Physically I feel great. It’s fun not to have to worry about clothing size. If I was younger I’d be more hung up on the way I look. Now I feel good and I’m healthy. I get to go into the latter part of my life, taking care of myself and being healthy."
Zoanne says her success is simply a matter of waking up and refusing to live the way she'd been living for another day. Once her determination was mixed with an effective eating regime, Zoanne had the recipe for weight loss success.
